Termite Protection

Content written by Mick the Builder
In the areas which have termites, termite barriers should be installed when appropriate, at which stage of construction , depends on the barriers to be used.  Some of the methods which may be suited for this are.

Termi mesh, uses a layer of fine stainless steel mesh as a barrier to stop the termites gaining access to the house.

Granite guard, uses a layer of specially prepared granite particles which the termites cannot dig through.

Articulated drip feed poison system, uses a grid of pipes under the slab which a periodically  pump full of poison to keep the termites away from the slab.

Pretreatment poisons spray, uses a spray of poison onto the ground under the slab at this stage, prior to placement of the vapour barrier, the spray which is used for this method is limited and strictly controlled, and/or prohibited in some states .

All of the above termite barrier systems are installed by fully qualified specialists for each system, and it is vital to know when to call them during the building construction process.  The concrete slab itself if constructing to the requirements of the Australian building standards is considered to be a physical barrier against termites itself.  However, the penetration that go through the slab, such as plumbing pipes , other service pipes and a perimeter of the slab must be protected to prevent termite access
